Prof. Cai Yuanli

Bio:

CAI Yuan-Li was born in Guizhou Province in 1963. He received the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degree in aerospace engineering from Northwestern Polytechnical University in 1984, 1987 and 1990, respectively.

From 1991 to 1992, he was with the State Key Laboratory of Structure & Vibration for Mechanical Systems as a research fellow. He joined the Department of Automatic Control, Xi’an Jiaotong University, as an Associate Professor in 1993, where he became a full Professor in 1999. He served as the Department Chair of Automatic Control from 1994 to 1998. He is currently the Deputy Director of Shaanxi Provincial Laboratory for Digital Technologies & Intelligent Systems, and the chairman of Institute of Control Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University. He has also held guest/visiting professor with California University at Riverside (USA), Yuan-Ze University (Taiwan), and the Chinese Academy of Science (China). Since 2000, Dr. Cai has held several parallel appointments, respectively with ST Dynamics, TMI Holding, and Yeken Plastics in Singapore, as technical consultant or technical director.

His main research interests are in the areas of guidance, control and dynamics for flight vehicles, embedded control, signal processing, and intelligent systems. He has taken charge of more than 50 national scientific projects and enterprise entrusted projects. He is the author / co-author of five books and more than 200 journal and conference papers. Dr. Cai is also a Senior Member of AIAA , a Member of Science and Technology Commission of Joint Research Center for Satellite Navigation of the Chinese Ministry of Education, Chairman of System Simulation Professional Committee of Chinese Association of Automation (CAA), a Member of Space and Vehicle Control Professional Committee of CAA, an evaluation expert of International Cooperation Projects of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, an evaluation expert of Chinese Mechanical and Electrical Equipment Tendering Center, and a supervisor of High-level Scientific and Technological Innovation Talents Engineering in the Army, etc.. Currently, he serves as editors for several transactions.

Since 2014, Dr. Cai has been appointed as the President of Xiamen Institute of Technology, Fujian Province. He is also the Fujian Province Education Evaluation Expert, and the managing director of Fujian Province Foreign Exchange Association.

Title: Modelling and Simulation of Large-Scale Artificial Neural Networks

Abstract

In the past years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has attracted wide attention worldwide. This is technically due to some new achievements on human-brain like biological neural networks have been made, including deep learning, big data analysis, etc. The human brain is a very complex large system, which includes about 1011 neurons, and each neuron has around 103~104 synapses. There are two main approaches to study such complex neural networks. One is the various experiments of biologists, and the other is the simulation research based on computer technology.

This speech will summarize the research progress of modeling and simulation large-scale artificial model neural networks, including the main methods and results, simulation methods and platforms. Some important models of neural networks will be discussed, and the main algorithms of neural network simulation will be analyzed, including the clock-driven algorithm, the event-driven algorithm and the hybrid-driven algorithm. The research and development status of neural network simulation platforms, including the famous tools such as NEURON, GENESIS, NEST and BRAIN, will be presented. Finally, some remarks on the parallel simulation of neural networks will be given out.
